A Favorite Recipe From the Farm
Lavender Simple Syrup Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons dried lavender buds (Ultra Blue Culinary Grade Lavender recommended)
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Once the sugar has dissolved, add the dried lavender buds and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat and let the syrup simmer for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste to check the lavender flavor – if you prefer a stronger taste, let it steep a little longer.
- Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool. Strain out the lavender buds using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
- Transfer the lavender syrup into a clean bottle or jar and store it in the refrigerator.
Serving Suggestions:
- Add to lemonade, iced tea, or sparkling water for a floral twist.
- Drizzle over cakes, ice cream, or fresh fruit.
- Use in cocktails like lavender lemonade or a lavender gin fizz!
This syrup can last for about 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator.
A True Story From The Farm: The Lavender Soap Lesson
When I first started making soap about 30 years ago, I was so excited to try my hand at crafting hot process lavender soap. The idea of incorporating beautiful lavender buds into the soap, giving it a lovely appearance and soothing aroma, felt like the perfect blend of nature’s gifts. But, as they say, experience is the best teacher.
I carefully added the fresh lavender buds to my batch, watching them swirl into the mix, thinking they’d dry and keep their vibrant beauty. But, to my horror, once the soap cured, those pretty lavender buds quickly transformed into something unrecognizable – they turned black, looking more like little mouse droppings than the beautiful, fragrant blossoms I had imagined. I had hoped to bring the soap to the farmers market, but sadly, it didn’t quite make the cut.
Even though it wasn’t as visually appealing as I’d hoped, we still enjoyed using the soap. The fragrance was as lovely as ever, and it worked wonders on our winter-dry skin, leaving it soft and nourished. Though I couldn’t sell that first batch, it became a memorable lesson in the journey of learning how to work with lavender and the artistry of soapmaking. Every mistake teaches you something, and that batch helped me better understand the process – and today, I’ve perfected the art of creating beautiful lavender soaps without those little surprises!
